He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 11th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif. He served two tours in Iraq during his eight years as a Marine, earning more than a dozen personal service awards, including the Purple Heart.
