They shared everything, father and son. They shared the same name, Frank Kevin Rivers. They shared dreams, advice and words of inspiration. They often leaned on each other through rocky times. The son wanted to just be like his father, a soldier in the U.S. Army. So Frank K. Rivers Jr. joined the Army after graduating from high school in 1999. But the 23-year-old died April 14 in Mosul, Iraq, after collapsing during military training. His death remains under investigation by the Army. Spc. Rivers was sent to Iraq in November as a member of the 334th Signal Co., a part of the 2nd Infantry Division's Stryker Brigade Combat Team. The Army posthumously awarded Rivers a Bronze Star, which was given to his father. "The Bronze Star is only awarded to heroes -- only to heroes," said Major Gen. William H. Russ. "Specialist Frank Kevin Rivers Jr. is an American hero. Today, we will present this star to the hero's hero. His younger brother, Lemar, also is in the Army and is stationed in Germany. Weatherford praised Rivers' character, saying it matched his trademark winning smile. "The one thing that stuck out was his consistency in terms of his conduct and his behavior," said Weatherford. "His demeanor reproduced everytime you came into contact with him. "He was true blue, as they say, through and through," Weatherford said. "In the rain and in the sunshine." Seven members of the honor guard fired three volleys each into the chilly spring air. The slow, bittersweet sound of taps lingered in the air as the honor guard methodically and delicately folded the American flag into a triangle. Then the flag was handed to the father.
