Army Spc. Sykes was assigned to 215th Brigade Support Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas. He died May 7 at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Landstuhl, Germany, of wounds sustained from an accident that occurred May 5 at Combat Outpost Crazy Horse, Iraq. Shawn was a graduate of Churchland High School in Portsmouth, Virginia. He first enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps but later enlisted in the U.S. Army as a food services specialist. Shawn had only been in Iraq since December when the accident happened. A propane tank exploded in his face as he was cooking and he was burned on his face and arm, which he used to shield himself from the blast. Shawn was taken to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany where he talked to his mother by phone and assured her that he was going to be OK - his death came as a shock. His decorations and awards include the Navy Commendation Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon and Navy Sea Service Deployment Ribbon. Shawn was the oldest of five children and the only son. He was the rock of the family – helping his mother though a divorce and advising her on her education. When he was home in April for two weeks, he told his family that he dreamed of buying a house in Florida where they could all live together.
